QS/1/6/352

Accounts re gaol at Bodmin from 1781 to present, including the expenses of conveying convicts and vagrants, appear to have considerably increased, and it is difficult to discover in what area this has occurred from the way in which the accounts have been kept: ordered that the accounts be arranged as follows:- subsistence of prisoners, clothing of same, bedding, utensils and repairs, repairs of buildings, expenses conveying and subsisting prisoners, fees for discharge, punishment, etc., keeper and turnkeys' salary and taxes, fuel; account of prisoners' labour also to be produced.

QS/1/6/353, 354

The Court called upon James Chapple, Keeper of the Gaol at Bodmin, to produce an account of the labour of prisoners in the gaol, and of £60 advanced to him to purchase materials for their employment, and accounts for 1784 to the present. Prisoners are employed in polishing moor-stone and slate, in working up wool, and in labour for repairs of the gaol. £354 11s. 3¾d. paid for slate, £79 18s. 8d. + £60 advanced, total £494 9s. 11¾d. It appears he has paid £218 11s. 3d. for labour on the gaol, taken from the said sum, which he is to account for. James Chapple says that the prisoners might be more usefully employed in the growing and manu-facture of flax; he has 34 acres under cultivation, and has manufactured a considerable quantity of coarse linen, called Dowlas, for which he has used the balance and some of his own money. The Court considered it improper that the County should engage in such speculative concern, and highly disapprove of continuing the cultivation and manufacture of flax: ordered that the same be discontinued.
