Administrative / biographical background:

By 1828 priests from Chester, Congleton and Bollington were saying Mass in Crewe. The first resident priest, Rev J Gallagher arrived in 1844, and a school-chapel was opened in 1852. The present church, in Gatefield Street, dates from 1891.
