This mission of Capuchin friars was begun in 1858, mass at first being said in Bishop Lloyd's house, Watergate Row and later at 25 Watergate Street. An attempt from 1862 to build a permanent church off Cuppin Street and Grosvenor Street was initially thwarted by an earthquake, and later a hurricane, in 1863. However a new church was built on the site by 1875 under the supervision of the Guardian, Father Pacificus and opened in April of that year in the presence of Cardinal Manning |
