An attempt from 1862 to build a permanent church off Cuppin Street and Grosvenor Street was initially thwarted by an earthquake, and later a hurricane, in 1863. However a new church was built on the site by 1875 under the supervision of the Guardian, Father Pacificus and opened in April of that year in the presence of Cardinal Manning
