Administrative / biographical background:

He was one of the founder members of the Rye Protection Society which successfully contested the local council's proposal to build the inner-relief road over a corner of the Rye. He was chairman and one of its vice-presidents and he appeared at a number of local planning inquiries as a witness for the society.

 

He was also a member of High Wycombe History Society and was running a course on local history at the Wellesbourne Adult Education Centre.

 

He was also group chairman of the building and environment group of the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health.

 

A building business was started by his family in 1853 and Mr. Steevens ran the business from 1930 until his retirement a few years ago. Since retirement he worked as a building and architectural consultant for a firm of indexing and information specialists. He was a fellow of the Institute of Builders.

 

A lifelong Methodist, Mr. Steevens was a lay preacher for 46 years and a circuit steward in the High Wycombe Methodist Circuit and preached at every Methodist Church in the area. He was also secretary, trustee and a former Sunday school superintendent at Wesley Methodist Church in Priory Road, High Wycombe; a chairman of the High Wycombe Free Church Federal Council; and secretary of the local British and Foreign Bible Society.
