Catalogue description Papers of the Holloway family of Thame, Oxon

These papers are from the Holloway family of Thame in Oxfordshire and the two related families of Wakeman of Warminster, Wiltshire and Hankins of Dymock in Gloucestershire. All three families had connections with firms of solicitors. Richard Holloway and his sons Richard and William were partners in the firm of Holloway and Birch in Thame. The collection was deposited at this Office by Farnfield and Nicholls, solicitors of Warminster

Much of this collection relates to the trust established by the will of Richard Holloway in 1819 leaving legacies for his children payable from his estates. His property proved to be insufficient to meet the legacies which led to complicated and lengthy legal manoeuvrings. His son-in-law John Hankins began legal proceedings to recover money he felt to be due to him

Richard Holloway's son Benjamin married Hannah Mary Wakeman. Her brother Herbert John Wakeman became executor for Benjamin in 1871, Richard in 1873 and a trustee of the Holloway trust in 1875. It is likely that the papers passed to him. The collection includes material relating to the trust set up under his mother's marriage settlement and some items from his own legal practice in the firm of Wakeman and Seagrove of Warminster

Many items are in draft form only, sometimes with two or three copies. There are a few items, earlier in date than the rest of the papers, relating to property in Bucks, which have no obvious connection with Holloway, Hankins or Wakeman. They may be strays from the affairs of other clients
