Administrative / biographical background: |
Sandleford Hospital was established in 1948, using the buildings of the former Newbury Union Workhouse (see G/N). It was run in conjunction with the Newbury District Hospital (see D/H 4), but in its first years also continued to have a role in the administering of poor relief, particularly for vagrants. (See Land, Lowe & Whiteside, The Development of the Welfare State (HMSO 1992), p. 35.) Records dating from before 1948 originate from the Poor Law Institution. |
