The Record Office holds some material from the Grafton Crane Company of the Vulcan Works, Bedford, (ref: Z 331), but the crane drawings do not seem to have survived. This drawing is therefore a useful addition to Record Office holdings. Other relevant material includes a set of contract photographs of cranes taken outside the works in about 1926-1958 (ref: Z 791/41-66)

Administrative / biographical background:

Mr. Bearton acquired this drawing from Jack Burgess, a model engineer of the High Wycombe Model Engineering Club. In the early 1960s Mr. Burgess wrote to various crane manufacturers to enquire about crane designs in order to enable him to build authentic working steam models. Only Grafton replied, sending a copy of their drawing no.712/3971 with the Company name obscured. After Mr. Burgess's death, Mr. Bearton acquired the print.
