Immediate source of acquisition:

Records of the Smyth family of Ashton Court, sold at auction by Messrs. Sotheby Parke Bernet & Co. on the 5th July 1977. The records listed below represent four out of a total of ten lots emanating from Ashton Court, namely lots 4, 21, 25 and 101. The remaining lots were 98, 100, 119, 126, 127 and 128. All were clearly dispersed before the main collection was deposited in the Bristol Record Office

 

Lots 4, 25 and 101 were purchased at Sotheby's by the Bristol Record Office, aided by grants from the Victoria and Albert Museum Purchase Grant Fund, the Friends of the National Libraries and various Bristol organisations. Lot 21 was purchased subsequently from Messrs. Hofmann and Freeman, with the aid of a grant from the Victoria and Albert Museum.
