Administrative / biographical background: |
The origin of the Ancient Guild of St. Stephen's Ringers is obscure, but it was probably established on a religious basis. A charter, or Ordinance, was granted in 1620, redeeming a promise reputedly made by Elizabeth I when visiting Bristol in 1574. In later years the connection with bell-ringing was lost, the society becoming a more convivial body. Since the 1870's the Society has assumed responsibility for the restoration of the fabric of St. Stephen's. |
