Early career fellowships in cultural and heritage institutions: 2025
Find out more about the funding opportunity on the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) website.
The National Archives’ student placement scheme offers students the opportunity to apply their existing skills and knowledge to research-based projects, while developing new expertise in an organisation that straddles the government and cultural sectors. With placement projects ranging from one to three months, students will be mentored by a designated supervisor throughout their time at The National Archives, and equipped with a structured learning and development plan that allows students to track their progress.
These placements are only available to students who belong to our Doctoral Training Partnerships, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).
For further information, please contact the Research team or check this page for updates.

You may like to see whether there are opportunities at other archive services, for instance one attached to a local borough council. The National Archives find an archive search contains details of 2,500 archive services in the UK and beyond.
Our fellowships are designed to offer opportunities for collaborative research and professional development.
The National Archives is welcoming enquiries from Early Career Researchers into the AHRC Early career fellowships in cultural and heritage institutions: 2025 funding call. The scheme offers an opportunity for a Fellow to lead a project of their own design in collaboration with a cultural and heritage institution for two years.

This offers a fully funded post within the institution for the duration of the award, providing access to facilities, expertise and training opportunities. The scheme also works as a cohort, and the successful Fellows will work and grow together, enjoying the support of the Coordination and Cohort Support institution – currently the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A).
We would like to hear from you if you want to discuss your idea for a Fellowship that could be hosted by The National Archives. We welcome research on our three areas of research expertise and our four research themes; please see our Research Vision 2024-27 for full details on our themes and priorities.
Contact us to set up an initial half hour consultation with our Grant Development Team: Jessica Lutkin and Thomas Brown.
