After the Second World War, conflict between Arabs and Jewish Palestinians persisted. In April 1947 Britain approached the United Nations (UN) to relinquish the Palestinian mandate. The UN developed a plan for partitioning Palestine into independent Jewish and Arab states, but the mandate ended before the plan was actualised.
