Conservative Government
26 October 1951 - 5 April 1955
The 1951 election returned the Conservatives to power under Winston Churchill. They won 302 seats, while Labour took 295 and the Liberals, six. The Welfare State was maintained, but economic restrictions eased slightly and a few nationalisation programmes were dismantled. For the next 13 years the Conservative Party oversaw the dismantling of the empire.
