Equiano (Gustavus Vassa) initially acted as commissary for provisions
on the Sierra Leone scheme and seems to have encouraged Black people
to join. This letter shows the authorities' response to his
complaints of mismanagement, corruption and poor treatment of the
emigrants. The captain of the Nautilus responded by complaining
about Equiano, who lost his job. It is more than likely that Equiano's
complaints were justified.
