Telegrams being sent from the Post Office in Guernsey at the end of the Second World War. Wikimedia Commons, National Archives Records Administration.
Image description
A crowd of men and women and a small child stand in front of a post office counter which displays three British flags. The people in the crowd are wearing caps or hats and coats. The photograph was taken by a Ministry of Food photographer on 16 May 1945 after the Channel Islands (Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and Sark) had been liberated from the Germans. For the first time in 5 years, telegraph services were restored and there was a rush to communicate to family and friends to let them know that they were alright.
