Discover the story of the emergence of the United States of America.
A section from the first map of North America printed in the new United States, 1785. Catalogue reference: CO 700/NorthAmericanColoniesGeneral17
The American Revolution is usually remembered as the advent of the United States – but it is as much a British story as an American one. The vast numbers of colonial records stored at The National Archives offer a unique, British insight into the Revolution showing how the state responded to the crisis and charting the experiences of ordinary people embroiled in the conflict in north America.
These records form the backbone of our major upcoming exhibition, Revolution 250: America's Independence Story 1763–1783. Join curators Sean Cunningham and Graham Moore on a whistlestop tour which tells the story of the American Revolution in just ten fascinating archival documents.
