International Science and the British Council, 1934 to 1995

This project takes a new approach to the history of twentieth-century science by utilising British Council and Foreign Office records.

This project takes a new approach to the history of twentieth-century science by utilising British Council and Foreign Office records.

The British Council was established in 1934 as the UK’s international cultural and educational institution. From 1941 to 1995 the British Council operated a Science Advisory Committee (catalogue reference: BW 81). The committee promoted:

  • Britain’s contribution to global science
  • Assisted British scientists in exchanging research and innovation with international counterparts
  • Facilitated professional exchanges between scientists and the world

This project explores the role of science in British diplomacy as a core and often overlooked feature in international relations. The PhD student will have the opportunity to trace the development of British science from the end of the Second World War through to the Cold War. They will also make use of our rich record collections from the Department for Education and Science (ED), Overseas Development (OD), and the Foreign Office (FO).
