Draft letter from the Local Government Board to John Kirkland, Clerk to the Guardians of the Southwell Union, regarding the dinner dietary supplied to workhouse children attending a public elementary school.
H Stevens, Local Government Inspector, has provided the Board with details of the food which is stated to be actually provided for the children which suggests that the information in the guardians’ letter of 20 July does not accurately represent the facts. The Board’s approval should be sought before any alteration is made in the workhouse inmates’ dietary. For alterations to be made they must be approved by the guardians and medical officer and detailed information of the food, including the ingredients involved, be sent to the Board. The guardians are also informed that the children do not enjoy the pea soup and so scarcely eat any dinner on the day that it is provided.
