The Friends of The National Archives is a charity that supports The National Archives to look after millions of irreplaceable documents. The charity also help create a greater public awareness of these documents.
The Friends support The National Archive by providing funding towards many document, education and outreach projects at the archives.
The National Archives relies on the support of the Friends to fund many important projects, that would otherwise not go ahead.
All proceeds go towards supporting the work of The National Archives.
Who the Friends are and what they do
The Friends is a voluntary organisation dedicated to supporting our role in preserving and providing access to the nation’s records.
The Friends of The National Archives have funded numerous projects involving:
- conservation
- digitisation
- cataloguing and indexing of documents
- education
- specialist equipment
To do this, The Friends provide grants to support projects, as well as getting involved in volunteering.
The Friends aim to:
- promote and assist the work of The National Archives through fundraising and practical support
- educate the public in the knowledge of public and other records
In addition, The Friends have part-funded conferences and seminars at The National Archives. They also organise and host events at The National Archives.

The Friends of The National Archives perform a valuable role by helping to raise funds to support The National Archives. In joining the Friends, you will play a part in protecting the nation’s records.
Donations from Friends help The National Archives carry out its vital work.
