About this image

Illustration of the battle of Gisors in 1197, from the 14th century.

Join Paul Dryburgh, collections specialist in medieval records at The National Archives, as he explores English military success and failure from 1277 to 1453.

This was a time when the crown pursued expansion and dynastic claims across the British Isles and into the Kingdom of France. But the ever-present threat of conflict between the competing powers, climate crises and epidemic catastrophes ensured attention could not slip away from peacemaking too.
