Handling parchment bundles
Parchment bundles come in a variety of sizes and weights, some of which may present handling issues. They can be made from single membranes sewn together or an assortment of different sizes joined with cord. They often have text on both sides and can contain folded sections.
Areas of vulnerability
- Areas of joining are vulnerable to damage – sewing thread or cord can break, leading to separation and loss of membranes; sewing holes are vulnerable to tearing during use, which can lead to incorrect replacement or complete loss of pages.
- Inks and pigments are not absorbed into the surface of parchment, so can become friable and are at risk of abrasion during handling. They can also be vulnerable to light exposure which can lead to fading or loss.

Handling aids
- Glass weights provide a gentle, low-contact weight for handling parchments that are damaged or fragile.
- Snake weights are useful for applying an easily-positioned weight to keep materials in place.
- Bag weights can be used on non-fragile areas of the document and – if needed stacked to provide extra weight. They are not suitable for use on areas with text or images.
- Flat pads can be stacked to provide a raised surface to support membranes that are sewn at the head.

Handling top tips
- Ensure the parchment bundle is well-supported when removing it from its housing. If the housing is tight-fitting, gently turn the box over onto the table to release it.
- Turn the membranes slowly, being conscious of vulnerable areas, supporting with handling aids, as needed.
- Avoid touching areas of text directly when reading – use the paper markers provided to follow lines of text.
- When using weights, avoid placing them directly onto areas of text.
- Ensure all wrappings, ties and tapes are replaced after use.
