This image is from the title of the Treaty of Brigham-Northampton, between Edward I of England and the Guardians of Scotland. The treaty agreed the marriage of Edward of Carnarfon (later Edward II) and Margaret, daughter of King Eric of Norway, the granddaughter and heir of Alexander III of Scotland. The pictures of Margaret, 'the Maid of Norway', in a ship and the lion rampant of Scotland show her journey from Norway to take the throne of Scotland. Her death on Orkney in September 1290 left the country without an obvious heir.
