Letchworth Hospital was founded in Letchworth Garden City in 1914 in temporary premises in Pixmore Farm House, as the intended cottage hospital plans were hampered by the outbreak of the First World War. Prior to that Letchworth had been served by the Letchworth Provident Dispensary, but with the expansion of the first Garden City it was considered that the town needed a hospital. As with many of the Garden City Companies, the Hospital Association was established as an incorporated company and it was financed, like other voluntary hospitals, by subscriptions and donations. In 1921, the hospital moved to permanent premises in Baldock road. Pixmore Farm House had really only provided accommodation for a comprehensive series of out-patient clinics rather than in-patient wards. The Board of Management, however, found it difficult to maintain the hospital financially, and spent much time fund raising. On 5 July 1948 responsibility for the hospital passed to the Minister of Health under the responsibility of the North West Metropolitan Hospital Board.
