The hospital opened in 1849 as the Royal Portsmouth, Portsea and Gosport Hospital and in 1866 its name was shortened to the Royal Portsmouth Hospital. It succeeded the Portsmouth and Portsea General Dispensary which was opened in 1821 and took some in-patients from 1828. The Royal Hospital was closed in 1979 when the extensions to Queen Alexandra Hospital were opened.
