The hospital was opened by the Town Council in 1920 in Elm Grove. It moved to Trafalgar Place, Fratton, in 1929 where there was already a child welfare clinic. In 1935 the hospital was absorbed by the maternity unity in St Mary's Hospital as Trafalgar Place was too small.
