Other information
The hospital was established as the East Sussex, Hastings and St Leonards Infirmary, a subscription hospital and opened its doors to out-patients in July 1841 and to in-patients in Spetember of the same year. The infirmary stood in White Rock Road but in 1911 the committee of what was now called the East Sussex Hospital acquired a site on the corner of Bohemia and Cambridge Roads and ran an architectural competion for the design of a new hospital building. But the first world war intervened, causing prices to rise and completion was delayed due to disputes with the architects, lack of money and technical problems so that the new building was not opened until 1923. In 1948 the hospital continued as a general hospital under the National Health Service, answerable to the Hastings Hospital Management Committee. In 1974, on the reorganization of the NHS, it was placed in the Hasting Health District and in 1992 it closed, on the opening of the Conquest District General Hospital.
