Other information

Originated in the Voluntary Dispensary founded by public subscription 1782, in 1798 activities wre centralised in a 56 bed infirmary in King St, and in 1812 the Lunatic Asylum was built on ground in Albert St now covered by Baxter Park. Infirmary received a Royal Charter in 1819 as 'Dundee Royal Infirmary and Asylum'. In 1852 work began on a new site in Barrack Road and in 1855 the hospital moved and began to diversify services with new children's, eye, ENT and outpatient wards. Furthe Royal charters were granted in 1877 and 1898, on the opening of a convalescent home at Barnhill and on the addition of a maternity hospital. In July 1948 the running of the Infirmary was transferred to the NHS, and it closed in 1998.
