A sanatorium for the free treatment of Tuberculosis was first proposed in 1899. A site was donated by Earl of Airlie at Auchterhouse in the Sidlaw Hills outside Dundee and the Sanatorium was opned by his wife, the Countess of Airlie in Sep 1902. It received its first patient in Mar 1903. It operated as a charitable concern until 1910, when management was transferred to the Dundee Royal Infirmary. The Sanatorium was latterly used as a convalescent home and also catered for respite care patients. It cloed from 4 Nov 1980, patients were transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Dundee
