Other information

The Southampton Free Eye and Ear Hospital committee was established in 1889. It's premises were then in Oxford Street and until 1899 the Hospital also dealt with ear, nose and throat cases (in all cases for those without means to pay) The Hospital was supported by voluntary contributions. The Hospital was opened by Doctor Buller in August 1889. It was carried on at his own expence until July 1890. In 1895 it moved to new premises in Carlton Road, after alterations to Wilton House had been made. In spring 1994 the Eye unit moved to new buildings on the general hospital site in Tremona Road. The records essentially are for the period before Nationalization. There is an exceptionally fine series of case registers. Associated Hospitals: General Hospital - Now an eye unit within Southampton General Hospital, Tremona Road. Records essentailly date just to Nationalization.
