Sheffield Hospital for Women opened with 6 beds in a leased house in Figtree Lane on 29 June 1864, where it remained until 1878. Its objectives were to attend cases of midwifery and the diseases peculiar to women. Accommodation soon proved inadequate and the institution was renamed the Jessop Hospital for Women when a new building on Learygreave Road was opened on 30 July 1879. By 2001 the hospital will have moved from its present location to a new building attached to the Hallamshire Hospital. Associated Hospitals: Jessop (Firth) Auxiliary Hospital - From 1927, an auxiliary hospital for 45 patients.
