The colony was established in 1904. By 1929 there were 400 beds accommodating about 370 people. There were seven houses accommodating 30 to 40 people at 21 shillings per week, and two houses, for men and women resprectively, with more private accommodation at 42 shillings per week. Single-bedded and private sitting-rooms were available by special arrangement. Boys and girls were educated at Colthurst House School, at 42 shillings per week, or in special circumstances 21 shillings per week, up to the age of 17.
