Because of overcrowding in its premises at New Bridge street, the Princess Mary Maternity Hospital decided in 1919 to open branches in the West end and East end of the city. The Gables became the branch in the West end. The one in the East end never materialised. The Gables was purchased in 1919 from the Richardson family and came into use the same year for fee-paying patients. Originally managed by a sub-committee of the Princess Mary Maternity Hospital, it quickly acquired its own committee. In 1922 the Princess Mary Maternity Hospital moved to new premises in Jubilee Road and it was decided then that The Gables should now be totally independent. In 1948 the NHS decided not to take The Gables over in its rationalisation of local health services and by 1950 it was in finiancial difficulties. Since the Princess Mary Maternity Hospital refused to take The Gables back under its wing, it was forced to close and be sold to the Salvation Army who renamed it the Hopedene Nursing Home. This w
