The Northern Counties Chest Hospital was founded in 1878 as a private charity supported by various medical charity funds. It was for the use of the poor and all appointments prior to 1948 were honorary. The hospital was originally based at 50 Blackett Street, Newcastle and was known as The Northern Counties Hospital for Diseases of the Chest. In 1891 its title changed and it became known as the Northern Counties Hospital for Consumption and diseases of the Chest. The name was changed once again in 1924 to the Northern Counties Chest Hospital. The hospital moved premises twice, first in 1924 to 198 Westgate Road and secondly in 1930 to Derwent View Beechgrove Road. This premises subsequently changed its address to 167 Elswick Road. In 1948 as part of the NHS Act of 1946 the hospital was transferred to Newcastle Regional Hospital Board. In January 1952 the hospital became a chest clinic for the Western half of the city and Throckley. The hospital closed in the early 1980's.
