Other information

The hospital was originally established as a War Pensioner Hospital at Castle Leazes, Newcastle. Eventually in 1928 it was moved to Dunston Hill. It was controlled by the Ministry of Pensions until 1953 when it passed to the control of the Ministry of Health, but it was not absorbed into the National Health Service until 1 April 1956, when it became one of the group of hospitals administered by Gateshead and District Hospital Management Committee.
