Hospital
Last updated .
In 1936 the Gateshead County Borough Medical Officer of Health submitted a report advising that a new General Hospital for Gateshead was required. Following approval by the Council and the Minister of Health, work began on the new hospital in 1938, on a site adjoining Sheriff Hill Isolation Hospital. However, due to the War, building work was still in progress when the hospital was officially opened in March 1948, although patients had been treated there since 1943. In July 1948 the hospital was taken over by the NHS.
