Please note that Her Majesty’s Stationery Office (HMSO) was the publisher for the UK Parliament and Government until its publishing arm was privatised in 1996. HMSO continued to manage Crown copyright and remained the official printer of all Acts of Parliament and the official Gazettes before these responsibilities were passed to The National Archives (TNA).  While the Keeper of Public Records at The National Archives holds the title of Controller of His Majesty’s Stationery Office, TNA did not inherit the HMSO Controller’s Library and is not a repository for the full collection of HMSO publications.

You might be able to obtain details of HMSO or Colonial Office publications relating to North Borneo from these sources listed below:

• The British Library holds a collection of official publications which includes the HMSO Controller’s Library on microfilm, along with printed indexes. The British Library is one of six Legal Deposit Libraries in the UK and Ireland.  Under the legal deposit system, publishers must give a copy of every UK print publication to the British Library.  The other five legal deposit libraries are the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford, Cambridge University Library, National Library of Scotland, Trinity College Dublin and National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth.  They can request copies of print publications from publishers, and may therefore hold the information you are seeking
• The Internet Archive’s Open Library includes a searchable section of HMSO publications.
