Britain in 1914

Overview

When the German army invaded Belgium at the beginning of August 1914, violating the neutrality guaranteed by the 1839 Treaty of London, Britain issued an ultimatum. On 4 August 1914 Britain declared war on Germany and began to mobilise its forces, drawing in countries and territories from across the British empire.
