Act concerning 'Egyptians', 1530
| People from northern India began to arrive in England during
the 15th century but were presumed to have come from Egypt - and
were therefore described as 'Egyptian', which became corrupted to
'gypsy'. As this Act demonstrates, they were viewed with suspicion
and hostility. |
