An idea of Beveridge's aims and the breadth of vision of his Social
Insurance and Allied Services Report can be gleaned from the two pages
reproduced here. He saw the reconstruction period after the war as
an ideal time to create a comprehensive 'welfare state' that would
benefit the whole nation. His scheme aimed to abolish 'five giants':
want, squalor, ignorance, idleness and disease.
