The Beveridge Report: 'The Way to Freedom from Want'

An idea of Beveridge's aims and the breadth of vision of his Social Insurance and Allied Services Report can be gleaned from the two pages reproduced here. He saw the reconstruction period after the war as an ideal time to create a comprehensive 'welfare state' that would benefit the whole nation. His scheme aimed to abolish 'five giants': want, squalor, ignorance, idleness and disease.
