This substantial Norfolk roll contains individual assessments and certificates of assessment for the Free and Voluntary Contribution awarded to Henry VIII in May 1546. All of the documents appear to have been produced in association with the first collection, but, as the certificate of assessment for Norwich (rot 8) makes clear, they were intended for use in future collections as well.
The documents are as follows:
The first is a certificate of assessment (rot 1 m 1) and individual assessment for Loddon, Clavering, Blofield, Walsham, Taverham, Henstead, Humbleyard, Forehoe and Mitford hundreds. The certificate is dated 6 June 1546. This document was originally produced as a Chancery style roll with each parchment membrane stitched to the foot of the next. However, ithas been bound with the other documents in this piece as an Exchequer roll with with rotulets stiched at the head.
The second is a certificate of assessment (rot 8) and an individual assessment for the city of Norwich. It is dated 6 June 1546. At the end of the assessment is a list of the contributions made by the clergy.
The third is a certificate of assessment (rot 11) and an individual assessment for the town of Great Yarmouth. The certificate is dated 16 June 1546.
The fourth is a certificate of assessment (rot 13) and individual assessment for Earsham, Diss, Depwade, Shropham, Guiltcross, Grimshoe, Wayland and South Greenhoe hundreds, and the town of Thetford. The certificate is dated 16 June 1546. Unusually, all but the first and last rotulets of this assessment are paper. The first, unindexed, entry under Shropham hundred is for 'the earl of Sussex and his household'. The assessment for Kenninghall (rot 21) is divided between Kenninghall town and the household of the Duke of Norfolk.
The fifth is a certificate of assessment (rot 27) and individual assessment for Gallow, Brothercross, Smithdon, North Greenhoe, Launditch, Freebridge Lynn, Freebridge Marshland and Clackclose hundreds, and the town of King's Lynn. The certificate is dated 12 June 1546. At the end of the individual assessment (rot 30) is a list of the clergymen (vicars and rectors, all described as 'parson') who were liable to contribute, presumably, because their livings or private incomes were over a certain value.
The sixth is a certificate of residence stating that several people charged in the fifth document had been assessed twice. This document is dated 10 October 1546.
The seventh is a certificate of assessment (rot 32) and individual assessment for North and South Erpingham, East and West Flegg, Tunstead, Happing, Eynesford and Holt hundreds. The certificate is dated 12 June 1546. This document is larger than the rest and has acted as a wrapper when the entire piece is rolled up, consequently it has suffered some damage at the margins.
