This Wiltshire roll consists entirely of certificates of assessment and individual assessments relating to the benevolence imposed by Henry VIII in 1545. Receipts appear on each of the constituent rolls.

Each certificate is dated, these dates being given here as a range between the earliest and latest.

Note that the index entry for East Overton (rot 3) represents the manuscript entry 'Overton': that this is East Overton is indicated by comparison with E 179/198/259. Note also that the entry '[missing name]' in Kinwardstone hundred (rot 8) represents a place-name from which at least the initial is missing, the remnant appearing to read '-chardinstrete' (see the scope notes for the place-name 'Cherleton', in Kinwardstone hundred, which this entry probably represents, together with South Standen and Chilton Foliat). The entry for Great Bedwyn borough (rot 8d) represents the manuscript entry 'West Bedwyn and the borough'. Also the manuscript heading 'hundred of Marlborough' (rot 19) is presumably in error for 'borough of Marlborough', and has been indexed as such. The queried entry for Hill Deverill (rot 26d) represents a manuscript entry which appears to read 'Holdenell'.

Note the incorrect arrangement of rots 29-30, which appears entirely to be the work of modern conservators.
