This roll consists entirely of individual assessments, most of which explicitly relate to the fifteenth and tenth granted to Edward III in 1332, though there are exceptions. All but one clearly relate to taxpaying communities in Buckinghamshire, the exception to this (rot 52) merely bearing an illegible place-name. A number of the assessments in this roll represent both members of an indented pair (rots 2 &3, 4 & 5, 10 & 11, 14 & 15, 34 & 35). The roll is constituted as follows:
rots 1-13, 16-24, 26-30, 32-40, 42-52 & 54: These rotulets all give assessments either explicitly or evidently for the fifteenth and tenth of 1332.
rots 14-5: An indented pair, these rotulets both give assessments for Ludgershall and Tetchwick, Ashendon hundred, clearly for a fifteenth, but the grant is not specified.
rot 25: This rotulet explicitly gives the individual assessment for Upton, Stone hundred, for the twentieth granted to Edward III in 1327 (a number of similar documents, including one bearing a date, are at E 179/242/63).
rot 31: This rotulet gives an assessment for Adstock, Buckingham hundred, clearly for a fifteenth, but the grant is not specified.
rot 41: This rotulet appears to give an assessment for a place in Ashendon hundred, possibly Quarrendon, clearly for the fifteenth and tenth of 1332.
rot 53: This rotulet appears to relate to the second collection for the fifteenth and tenth granted to Edward III in 1334. It gives an individual assessment for Horton, Stoke hundred, explicitly for a fifteenth and tenth granted in Edward's ninth year, and at the foot of this is a note of the total 'paid to the abbot of Nutley by one tally'. On the dorse are details of payments from Horton towards various other grants levied in Edward's reign: those which are attributed to a particular regnal year are later than 1334. Presumably the information in this document was originally produced as a result of exceptional local negotiation (see notes for this grant).
Only two of the assessments for the fifteenth and tenth of 1332 are dated (indented pairs at rots 4 & 5, 19 November 1332; and rots 10 & 11, 2 November 1332). However the assessment for the twentieth of 1327 (rot 25) was presumably drawn up between the issue of the first commissions and the due date of the first collection (i.e. between 23 September 1327 and 3 February 1328); and the assessment for the second collection for the fifteenth and tenth of 1334 was presumably produced at about the date of the collection to which it relates (i.e. in February 1335). The roll has been assigned an approximate overall date covering those indicated here.
Note that the index entries for Upper and Lower Pollicott represent the manuscript entry 'Pollicott'. A further individual assessment for Westbury, Stodfold hundred, for the same grant is at E 179/242/4A.
A further membrane relating to the fifteenth and tenth of 1332 is at E 179/242/84 Part 5, and is partly transcribed in Chibnall's text (see publication notes). This membrane appears to be a fair copy of individual assessments produced locally: cf. E 179/378/13, another individual assessment for Hanslope.
