Emmajane Avery

Director of Public Engagement and Sector Leadership

Emmajane is responsible for leading our Public Engagement Strategy and our work with the archives sector. Her role includes developing on site and remote learning and engagement programmes for the public and wider educational audiences, including education, outreach, events and exhibitions. She is also responsible for marketing and communications and the on site visitor experience, including maintaining service excellence at The National Archives. In addition, she oversees The National Archives’ leadership of the archives sector and its responsibilities under the Royal Warrant of the Historical Manuscripts Commission. The purpose of Archives Sector Leadership is to ensure sustained or improved preservation of and access to the nation’s archive collections across the private, public and voluntary sectors.

Emmajane has been working in the museum, gallery, archive and cultural heritage sector since 1999. She holds a degree in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic from the University of Cambridge and an MA in Museology. She was previously Director of Learning and Visitor Experience at the Victoria and Albert Museum and was Chair of Kids in Museums for five years, an Arts Council-funded charity that supports museums, galleries, historic sites and archives to be as accessible as possible to families and young people.
