How do I browse the record list?

You can explore the entire collection of digital records by using the browse facility. From the home page, click on the 'Browse from here' button to go to a list of the government departments which created the electronic records we hold.

The list will give you details of:

  • The reference code that identifies the department
  • The name of the department
  • The date span of the records we hold from the department (NB: These dates do not just apply to the department's electronic records, but also its paper based ones. Paper records are not detailed in Electronic Records Online. Please see the Catalogue for further details of non-electronic records

When you select a link, you will see more information about the electronic records held by the relevant department. This can be either:

  • a list of broad groupings of records (divisions). The list will give you a description of these groupings and the date spans of the records (paper and electronic) within those groupings. Select a link to go to a list of the smaller groupings of records (series) within the relevant division.browse
  • A list of smaller groupings of records (series). The list will give you a reference number that identifies the record series, the title of the series, a brief description of its contents and the date spans of the records (paper and electronic) within the series. Select a link to go to a detailed list of the electronic records within the relevant series.

  • Once you have navigated down to the most detailed list, select the appropriate link to view additional information about and a copy of the relevant individual record.

Navigation tips on all "Browse" pages

  • You can browse down to specific records and still see details of the higher level information at the top. Click on any parent link to go back a step or steps.

  • There is a maximum display of ten records per page. Click on the page numbers and arrows located at the top and bottom right to move between pages.

  • To sort a list (either by reference or alphabetically by the title of the record/record grouping), select an option from the drop down menu and click on 'Go'.
