Catalogue references

All the documents in the The National Archives have a unique reference composed of letters and numbers. The first part of a reference is the code for the originating government department. The next part is for the series, followed by sub-series, sub-sub-series, piece and then item.

C is the Department code for Chancery (legal administration of the Crown and Court of Chancery), 1085-2001.

6 is the Series code for Court of Chancery: Six Clerks Office: Pleadings before 1714, Collins, c1625-1714.

The documents now in C 6 were originally kept in 611 bundles. The number assigned to each bundle now forms part of each reference - as in C 6/1, C 6/2 etc. Each bundle contained many individual law suits, expressed as C 6/1/1, C 6/1/2, etc.

What does C6/1/1-359/69 mean?

C6/1/1-359/69 means the range of documents from C 6/1/1 to C 6/359/69 - that is, the first 360 original bundles.

C6/360/1-419/121 means the range of documents from C 6/360/1 to C 6/419/121 - that is, the original bundles 360 to 419.
