Browsing allows you to look up all the catalogue descriptions (over 9.5 million) as in a paper list. Browse an area of The Catalogue if your searches are unsuccessful.
There are up to seven levels of description in The National Archives Catalogue, but bear in mind that department, series and piece are the only ones that appear always (mandatory). Orderable records can be found within pieces or items.
Browsing instructions
To reposition the list, type a code for a department (ADM) or series (BT 26) in the Browse from reference box and click .
You can see a list of the most popular
department codes.
Click on a closed folder to open up areas of the catalogue.
For example, click on at series level to open it and see the sub-series or piece references below.
The closed folder then becomes open and and displays a minus symbol 
To close a level, click on the open folder 
To see the next screen in the list click or Next
To see the previous screen click or Previous
You can also click or to reach the first or last screen in a section.
View the list by Hierarchy or Reference
You may list departments by title when you first access this screen and then choose between the default view by or 
The hierarchy view displays catalogue references under their parent divisions, series, sub-series, etc. This view helps to rule out areas of the catalogue and focus on a particular branch of the tree.
The reference option displays the catalogue in key order number (numerical sequence).
