Description SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) is a software package used for statistical analysis in the social sciences. The first version of SPSS was developed by SPSS Inc. in 1968. In 2009 SPSS Inc. was acquired by IBM. These files are generated by early versions of SPSS. Some later SPSS files are characterised in fmt/638. The files don't have a consistent extension, instead having sequential numbers, eg sample.1, sample.2, sample.3 etc.
