‘The boy on the donkey is my father, the girls are his sisters. They lived in Bermondsey, London. When he was 11 he was one of only three boys in his year to be selected to attend Bermondsey Central School. He left school in 1931 with no qualifications but later attended evening classes four times per week for three years to study for the ‘Matric. He failed it three times – always in French. In those days, to matriculate you had to pass five subjects at one sitting – fail one, you failed the lot!’
