‘Herbert (seen here at 18 years) was an Oundle boarder who rowed for Crosby House and was awarded House Colours. He went on to Queens’ College Cambridge (1926-29) and became a civil engineer working in docks engineering in UK ports and overseas, notably in RN bases in Singapore and Mombasa while with the Admiralty (1938-47). Miss Hirst was a friend of his mother, who had died in 1925. Herbert senior (60) was part-owner and manager of a family dyeworks business in Leeds. He worked in the business from 1880-1942 and lived in Leeds for 87 of his 90 years.’
