Year: 1921

‘The photograph was taken about six months after Alfred and his wife Monica moved into the tollhouse. According to Monica, the gas lamp in the photograph was soon after smashed during a very windy night and replaced by a ‘more modern type’. This was their home for the rest of the decade, and where they started their family. The twins, born in 1924, both died within a week of their birth. Laurence was born in 1926, Norah in 1927 and Gerald in 1929. Alfred also sold cigarettes and tobacco and was the tollhouse keeper until 1932.’
