Victoria Cross

Victoria Cross

The works in this section illustrate 41 individual acts of heroism by members of the three services during the Second World War. The pieces were commissioned by the Ministry of Information for a propaganda pamphlet illustrating the bravery and selflessness of members of the armed forces.

This section is by no means an exhaustive list of the Victoria Cross (VC) winners of the Second World War and only covers a limited number of recipients from the years 1939 to 1943. The range of pieces does however represent a broad cross section of Empire and Dominion troops with Australians, Canadians, New Zealanders, Rhodesians and Indians as well as British VC winners.

Where possible we have supported the artwork with the original recommendations for the VC from our extensive military archive. Some of these have the signatures of famous military leaders such as Auchinleck, ‘Bomber' Harris, Freyburg and Cunningham and come from a wide range of theatres and operations.

Many of the recipients in this gallery were awarded their VCs posthumously having paid the ultimate price for their acts of courage.
